USABC Awards Contract to EnerDel

EnerDel of Indianapolis, Indiana, has won a contract from the U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium to develop Li-ion battery technology for hybrid-electric vehicle applications. USABC, whose members include Chrysler, Ford and GM, awarded the contract in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy.

Valued at $6.5 million, the 18-month contract, is the second of a three-phase USABC program and requires a 50% cost share. The program aims to produce a cost-competitive, lithium-ion battery that is lighter, smaller and higher in power than existing technologies for HEVs.
