Saft to Supply Batteries to U.S. Coast Guard

Saft has been selected by BWT Lighting as the exclusive supplier for Li-ion batteries for solar-powered navigational lanterns. A leading company in opto-electronic systems, BWT Lighting will rely on Saft to provide more than 72,000 batteries for fixed-aid and buoy lanterns being built for the U.S. Coast Guard.

Saft’s advanced Li-ion batteries, in a 4S1P MP176065 configuration, will be the primary source of power for the buoys. Available in 15 configurations, the lanterns offer three sizes of solar panels as well as five individual Saft Li-ion power packs. These high power batteries were selected to replace the current lead-acid batteries, which are heavier and more difficult to install.

BWT Lighting was contracted by the USCG to design and develop the next generation of self-contained solar-powered lanterns. The BWT-100 series lanterns are the world’s most advanced solid state lighting (SSL) navigational aids, universally adapted for fixed-aid and buoy applications. These are the first solar-powered lanterns utilizing Saft Li-ion technology.
