TIAX Issued Patent for HEV Battery Technology
TIAX of Cambridge, Massachusetts, has been issued one patent and received one notice of allowance by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for its Cel-X™ battery control technology. Cel-X is a low-cost, high-performance system that improves the safety, capacity, and pack life of Li-ion batteries through a non-dissipative approach to regulating state of charge.
Compared to nickel-metal hydride batteries, Li-ion batteries have higher power capability and longer runtime in smaller, lighter, and more cost-effective packs, making them ideal for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). Technical challenges have kept Li-ions from being used in applications dependent on large battery packs made of multiple cells connected in series to achieve high voltages. A key hurdle has been the complexity and extra cost of regulating the state of charge across these series of connected cells.
