Flexible Ceramic Separator Transforms Li-ions

Lithium-ion batteries provide more power, are lighter, and are more compact than the nickel-metal hydride batteries currently used in hybrid electric vehicles. However, Li-ions can be harmed by overcharging, stifling the demand for HEVs.

To solve the problem, Degussa has developed a flexible ceramic product, the SEPARION® separator, which helps Li-ion batteries withstand overcharging. Made from polyethylene terephthalate, SEPARION is more stable than the polyolefin films previously used as separators, which improve the safety and performance of Li-ion batteries.
