PVDF Resins for Membranes and Batteries
Arkemas new high molecular weight Kynar®
PVDF resins are ideal for solution-based products
like cast membranes, hollow fiber membranes, and
binders for lithium- ion battery manufacture.
The new Kynar resins have 3 to 15 times higher
solution viscosities in n-methylpyrrolidone (NMP)
than the Kynar resins currently used for these
applications. In membranes, this increased viscosity
allows for better hollow fiber casting and better
membrane film formation. The high molecular weight
translates into higher temperature resistance,
improved physical toughness and increased chemical
resistance. For lithium-ion battery applications,
these resins improve productivity via quicker
solubility, better electrode adhesion, and reduced
use of electrode binders. Additionally, emulsion
Kynar resins offer improved stress crack resistance
in chemical applications.
The new high molecular weight Kynar resins are
available as free-flowing powders and allow easy
preparation of PVDF solutions. The Kynar-based
fluoropolymer solutions are compatible with a
variety of additives and co-solvents frequently
used for solution cast membranes. Typical solvents
used with these new resins are (but are not limited
to) n-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), dimethylacetamide
(DMA), and dimethylformamide (DMF).
