BMW X3 Hybrid Vehicle
The BMW Concept X3 EfficientDynamics achieves
an increase in performance while improving on
the fuel consumption by up to 20% over the standard
X3.
Whenever the driver applies the brakes and slows
to a standstill, the gas engine is switched off,
negating fuel consumption and emissions. The electric
motor is converted into an alternator, recharging
the power supply. When the accelerator is depressed,
the engine restarts automatically.
If the driver continues to apply the accelerator,
the 400Nm electric motor starts automatically,
delivering a claimed maximum output of 61kW. Under
moderate acceleration, the system uses only the
electric motor to minimize consumption and emissions.
At maximum acceleration the output of the electric
motor and combustion engine combine to deliver
up to 600Nm of torque but with engine speeds below
1500rpm.
Power storage and supply comes from double-layer
capacitors or Super Caps, located in the vehicle
sills. Offering over 10 times more capacity per
kilogram than conventional nickel/metal hydride
batteries, Super Caps have an overall capacity
of 190kW.
The Concept X3 EfficientDynamics also combines
BMWs now familiar Valvetronic throttle with
High Precision Injection technology the
first jet-guided direct injection system for large-scale
production.
