LG Chem to Issue Long-life Battery
LG Chem of South Korea will mass produce a cylindrical
lithium-ion battery with the worlds largest
storage capacity. The company has finished testing
the battery, which can be used in laptop computers
and camcorders.
When used in laptops, the battery lasts 4.5 to
5.5 hours when fully charged, according to the
company. It can be used many times through recharging
and can also be used for heavy industrial machineries.
We are already at an equal level with the
top Japanese manufacturers in high-tech battery
technology, says Kim Myeong-ho, LG Chems
managing director. Korean and Japanese battery
makers have been competing to increase the capacity
of cylindrical lithium-ion batteries that are
18mm in diameter and 65mm tall.
The company recently signed a $300 million contract
with Hewlett-Packard to supply 10 million lithium-ion
battery packs to the American computer maker until
2007.
