Sanyo Changes Batteries
Sanyo Electric Co., based in Osaka, Japan, plans
to change the design of its rechargeable batteries
to use less cobalt. Cobalt prices have more than
doubled, rising to US$25 per pound from $9 in
September 2003.
Worlds largest maker of rechargeable batteries
used in mobile phones, Sanyo will cut the amount
of cobalt in its lithium-ion batteries by changing
the composition of some components.
