Hitachi and Shin-Kobe Consider Joint Venture
Hitachi, Ltd. and Shin-Kobe Electric Machinery Co., Ltd. are considering a
joint venture company to market, develop, and
manufacture rechargeable lithium-ion batteries
for hybrid electric vehicles. The new company
would be established in fiscal 2004.
In 2000, Hitachi and Shin-Kobe led the world in
commercializing products for HEV, and in 2003
mass produced a rechargeable lithium-ion battery
for electric scooters. Hitachi offers a complete
HEV system lineup, including rechargeable lithium-ion
batteries.
Plans call for the proposed joint venture to build
a pilot line this fall.
